Questions people ask
Getting started
What is Wander Story?
Wander Story is an iPhone app where you write a story together with AI, one part at a time, and hear it narrated aloud. You choose a genre, name your hero, and say what happens next. The app writes each part and reads it to you. You are in charge: you choose the idea for each part, you can change the latest part, and you say when the story ends.
Who is Wander Story for?
Wander Story is for people 13 and older. It is not directed to children under 13. Stories are meant for a general audience, including teens.
Which iPhones does it work on?
Wander Story needs iOS 18 or later. Free Mini Stories are written by a model that runs on your iPhone, which needs at least 8 GB of memory (for example, iPhone 15 Pro and newer Pro models). Short Stories and Long Stories use cloud AI instead, so they work on other iPhones too. If your iPhone is not able to run Mini Stories, the app tells you.
Do I need an internet connection?
Not for Mini Stories. The story writer and the narration voice are inside the app. You need a connection for Short Stories, Long Stories, cover art, and title suggestions, which are made by advanced AI cloud models.
What is the difference between Mini Stories, Short Stories and Long Stories?
A Mini Story is free and runs up to five parts. A Short Story runs up to twelve parts and a Long Story up to twenty-four. You can choose to end any story sooner. The longer types use advanced AI cloud models and need a plan.
They are also richer, not just longer. Characters have personalities, motivations, flaws, and arcs. Every scene moves the story forward. Decisions have consequences that shape what comes next, challenges force characters to face their own weaknesses, and earlier details and choices pay off in a meaningful ending.
Writing and changing your story
How do I change a part after it is written?
Under the latest part, tap Change the Story (at the end of a story it is Change this Conclusion). A Change window opens with three tabs: Rewrite, Adjustments, and Manual Edit. A few rules apply to all three:
- Only the latest part can be changed. Once you add the next part, a new chapter, or the ending, every earlier part is locked, because changing it could break the plot built on top of it.
- Each part gets one change. A rewrite, an adjustment, or a manual edit uses it up, and then the Change link goes away for that part. Choose carefully before you tap.
- Everything you type is checked against our content rules before anything is saved or sent. If it is turned away, the app tells you why and you keep your words.
- Chapter names and the story title are edited separately, not in this window.
Rewrite writes the part again from a different idea. The ideas that were offered when the part was first written but not used are listed (normally two), and you can type your own instead. In Short and Long Stories you can tap a suggestion and then edit or extend it before you tap Rewrite this Part. The new version replaces the old one.
Adjustments keep the part as it is and change only small details. How it works depends on the kind of story:
- Short and Long Stories. The app thinks of up to three small changes for that part, each a single sentence, such as renaming a character who first appears in the part, swapping a place or an object, changing the weather or the mood, or changing how someone speaks. Tap the ones you want, in any order, and combine as many as you like; tap again to remove one. If you type in the box yourself, the suggestions turn grey, and Start over brings them back. When you tap Rewrite this Part, the AI rewrites it with only those changes: the same events, in the same order, at the same length and with the same ending. Adjustments cannot rename your hero, change anything from earlier parts, or move the plot. The suggestions need an internet connection.
- Mini Stories. Adjustments here means renaming characters, and nothing else. The characters who have already appeared in the story are listed (never your hero, and a character whose name has not come up yet is left off, so nothing is given away). For each one you want to rename, type a new one-word name or tap the dice for a built-in name. The new name replaces the old one everywhere in the story, in every part and title, and the character keeps their gender so the pronouns stay right. No AI is involved, so it is instant, works without an internet connection, and changes nothing but the names.
Manual Edit lets you change the text of the part yourself. Save is available once the text has changed and is not empty. In Short and Long Stories the app also tells the writer about your edit so later parts follow it, which needs an internet connection; if that cannot be done, nothing is saved and you can try again. In Mini Stories the edit is saved on your iPhone and later parts take it into account.
Narration and voice
How does narration work?
Your story is read aloud in Audio Only Mode, including when your iPhone is connected to CarPlay. You choose the narrator in Settings, under Narration Voice:
- iPhone AI Text To Speech (the default). A natural-sounding AI voice that runs entirely on your iPhone, with nothing to download and no internet needed. At the time of writing, in 2026, it gives the clearest and most listenable narration of the two. You can choose from twenty American English voices and set the speaking speed.
- Standard Apple. The voice built into your iPhone. It starts instantly. You pick its voice in the iPhone Settings app, under Accessibility, Read & Speak, Voices; a Premium voice sounds best.
You can play a story from the start, replay a part or a chapter, or pause and come back later.
How warm-up works. The AI voice makes its audio on your iPhone before it plays it, so there can be a short wait, mostly the first time a story is narrated and for long chapters. While it prepares, the screen says Warming up narration with a countdown, and the app says “Stand by. Warming up narration” and then announces the time left every thirty seconds if the wait is long. If the story’s genre has intro music, it plays during the wait, and the narration begins as soon as it ends. The finished audio is kept on your iPhone, so replaying or coming back later starts right away. If you change the voice or the speed, the audio is prepared again in the new voice. The Standard Apple voice needs no warm-up.
How do I use my voice?
In Audio Only Mode, the app reads a part and then says “What happens next?” and reads you three options. Say “one,” “two,” or “three” to pick one, or tap it. When it is time to end the story, the three options are endings.
You can also say “listen to the options again,” “play it again,” “play the chapter again from the beginning,” “play the whole story from the beginning,” “end the story,” “pause it here and come back later,” or “help.” The app asks for microphone and speech recognition permission the first time. Speech recognition is provided by Apple, and Apple may process your audio to turn it into text.
How does CarPlay work?
Wander Story works with CarPlay as a Now Playing app. Start Audio Only Mode on your iPhone before you drive, then connect to CarPlay. Your story plays through your car, and the CarPlay Now Playing screen shows the story title, chapter, and cover, with play, pause, and previous and next chapter controls.
Wander Story does not have its own CarPlay screens, so you cannot browse your library, start a new story, or choose what happens next from the car display. Set up your story and choose its parts on your iPhone. Please keep your eyes on the road and never hold or touch your phone while driving. How CarPlay looks depends on your car and your iPhone.
Cover art, sharing, and plans
How do cover art and titles work?
When you finish a story you can generate cover art and a suggested title, using the allowance that comes with your plan. Each story can have one cover generated, and you can edit the title.
How do I share or save a story?
Open a story and choose Share. You can export a PDF, or export a Wander file (.wander) that holds the whole story, its cover, and what the app needs to keep writing it. Send it by AirDrop, email, or text, and open it in Wander Story with Import.
How do plans and billing work?
Plans are annual subscriptions bought through the App Store. They renew automatically until you cancel, and plans stack, so owning more than one adds their story and cover art allowances together. Apple handles all billing. To manage or cancel, open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions. For a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com, since Apple processes refunds for App Store purchases.
I reinstalled the app or got a new iPhone. Are my plans still there?
Plans are tied to the Apple account you bought them with. Sign in with that account on the new device. If something is missing, email us and we will sort it out.
Privacy and safety
Are my stories private?
Your stories are stored on your iPhone, and there is no account. Mini Stories are written on your device and nothing is sent anywhere. When you create a Short Story or Long Story, or ask for cover art or a title, the story details you have written are sent to OpenAI to do that job, and OpenAI keeps its own record for a time. Read the Privacy Policy for the full picture.
How do I delete my stories and data?
Delete a story from your library to remove it, or delete the app to remove everything stored on your iPhone. We do not keep copies on our own servers. Text sent to OpenAI for longer stories, covers, and titles is handled under OpenAI’s policies; see the Privacy Policy.
The AI wrote something that bothers me. What can I do?
We are sorry, and thank you for telling us. We take AI safety seriously, and Wander Story is built around it. It is made for a general audience that includes teens, and it uses several layers of protection:
- Input checks. Before anything you type or say is used in a Short or Long Story, it is checked with OpenAI’s moderation service. It is turned away if it contains sexual content (including any sexual or romantic content involving children or teenagers), hateful language, threats or harassment, self-harm, instructions for illegal or dangerous activities, or extremely graphic violence. In Mini Stories, the iPhone screens what you enter for the same kinds of content, plus profanity.
- Writing guardrails. Every Short and Long Story request tells the writer to keep everything suitable for a general audience; never to write sexual content beyond a closed-door kiss, or anything sexual involving a minor; never to use hate speech or slurs; never to give real instructions for weapons, drugs, or dangerous stunts; never to describe methods of self-harm; and to ignore anything in your ideas that asks it to break these rules.
- Screening of what the writer produces. In Mini Stories, the text the on-device writer produces is screened too, and anything that fails is retried or left out.
No system is perfect, and AI can still occasionally write something unexpected. If that happens, use Change on the latest part to fix it (Rewrite, Adjustments, or Manual Edit). Please also email us at support@three-coves.com and tell us what happened, without personal information, so we can strengthen the protections. The AI safety section of the Privacy Policy explains more.
